Enter Into the Spirit of It

Don’t let the title, “Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Sad” scare you out of your wits and humor.

Don’t let it throw you into anything more than laughter. Don’t even try to decipher that title. It’s as simple as it is long and the picture is even funnier than the title.

A likely story? Well, there’s nothing complicated about it. It’s just the usual Domineering-Mother/Frisky-Father/Simpleton-Son/Sexy-Seducer/Naïve-Millionaire/Lively-Corpse/Other-Woman comedy.

“Oh Dad, Poor Dad” turned on New York theater audiences a short time back. Now it’s on the screen with a cast – and music – to fortify the fun.

The music is by Neal Hefti, the noted composer-arranger. Batman Theme is his. So is a long list of Count Basie and Woody Herman arrangements. So are jazz classics like Coral Reef, Cute, and Girl Talk. His score here is spooky, sensuous, contemporary and simply perfect.

Don’t get the idea that Mamma hangs Dad in the closet in this film because she doesn’t like things lying around.

She’s neat but gaudy.

So is “Oh Dad, Poor Dad.:

Enter into the spirit of it. Dad did. He may have died laughing.
